Dinner with Thor last night at La Lucha, a Mexican wrestling-themed restaurant on Avenue A. The movie being shown (without sound) was Santo contra Blue Demon en la Atlántida (1970), which includes several scenes modeled (cheaply) shot-for-shot on scenes from the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice, as well as stock footage from some Japanese films including Monster Zero, and a supporting actor who looked eerily like Dennis Hopper.

A young boy dining with his mother was allowed to try on one of the wrestling masks they have for sale, and decided that his ring name would be Snow Leopard (Leoparde Nieve).

All the menu selections were named after Mexican wrestlers. I had the Mil Mascaras (3 tacos).

Quick getaway this week to the far north. Jeff was a Katz's virgin, so he and I had dinner here after seeing Exit through the Gift Shop at Landmark Sunshine Cinema.

Jeff is going to be teaching in New York from May 30 to July 5, and is looking for a sublet, preferably downtown and near subway. Any suggestions or leads would be much appreciated.

That's [livejournal.com profile] danbearnyc on the left outside La Mama in July 2005, where the six of us had just seen a play about Charles Ludlam. As usual, Dan had brought a bag full of gifts and treats.

I'm back in New York December 11-20, before Jeff and I head back to North Carolina. We've got tickets to a couple of exciting shows. Anyone want to join us? Check out the descriptions and dates and if you're interested grab a ticket (fast -- they're both likely to sell out once the reviews are out) and let us know you're coming. We can figure out a place for dinner beforehand and/or drinks after.

The Last Cargo Cult, Saturday December 12 at 7:00. The Public Theater.
Master storyteller Mike Daisey brings his latest show to New York. Last year, during the global economic meltdown, he traveled to a remote South Pacific island whose people worship America and its cargo, and has now returned to tell the tale. More about the show.

Brief Encounter, Thursday December 17 at 8:00, St. Ann's Warehouse
Kneehigh Theatre's adaptation of the 1946 David Lean film (which is based on the Noël Coward one-act Still Life). The production uses live theater and remade film footage, as well as songs of Noël Coward. More about the show.

Deduce the location and name the nearby theater and play

The serenely modern (and almost deserted) JetBlue baggage carousel at JFK yesterday.

I'm back in New York for a quick visit over Thanksgiving.

The recent sudden closing of the Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (after just one week of performances) and the cancellation of its companion piece Broadway Bound (before it opened) caused a lot of consternation and debate in the press and the theater blogosphere. Some blamed the crash and burn on a lack of television stars, some on unappreciative audiences (though others disagree), and some on just plain old bad producing.

The Playgoer blog evaluates the arguments. Playgoer’s conclusion:

Memo to serious drama: Abandon Broadway before it abandons you.
